Redefining The Purpose Of Your Business During A Pandemic

What is your business effect?

In my keynotes for business organizations, I speak about methods, results and effect.

Methods are the things we do to run our business that most people don’t see or don’t care about.

Results are the measurable, tangible ways we know our methods are succeeding.

Effect is the perceived impact of your results on your intended audience.

Methods are real, but not seen.

Results are real, but irrelevant.

Effects are not real. They are imaginary.

But effects are perceived, and they are what drive us to take action.

That is why I help my clients uncover their ultimate perceived effects. Those effects are what drive their business.

Currently, as the world transforms during this pandemic, I’m adapting my own business. So my methods are changing. And my effect has changed as well.

My methods used to be:

practice
prepare
travel
show-up
speak
ask questions
share ideas

My results were:

engaged group
motivated audiences
people learn something new
think about their work in a different way

My effect was:

Change & Transformation

My impact was that people would take away new ideas and ways of “thinking like a magician” that would transform the way they see, think and act from that point forward.

I came to realize this about ten years into my speaking career. After hundreds of speeches, I came to see that the biggest effect I was having on people is showing them how they have the power and ability to enact change upon their world. Like a magician, they can create a transformation for themselves and others.

So that was what I was doing before COVID-19. In March 2020, as all my corporate shows were postponed and public shows canceled, I shifted my business

This week, I sat down to identify my methods, results and effects. I wanted to use my own principles to ensure I’m on the right path and that I remain effects-focused.

My method is now speaking as a virtual motivational speaker and doing magic for people via a camera in virtual magic shows. It’s still live, but now it’s virtual. I practice, prepare, and then travel to my living room, which is set-up as a studio.

To be more specific, since I ask my audiences to make a list of methods, here are mine:

Methods:

interview my audiences members
ask questions
show them things they’ve never seen
tell them interesting ideas they’ll want to share with others
give them something they can do together while we’re together
give them something to play with or think about after we are done.

My Results are:

People are seen and called on by name
People are acknowledged
People are asked to participate
People are asked to interact with other people

Through these results, my audiences are intrigued, fascinated, challenged, entertained, and bonded with other people.

My Effect becomes:

Community

I’m reinforcing community. That’s what I’m really doing. That is something that is not measurable or tangible. My effect is imaginary and perceived. All effects are. But my effect is what drives my audience to hire me.

The Effect Of My Business Is To Reinforce Community

For some groups, it’s their family community. For others it’s their work-life community. For some it’s a local community that they’ve always been a part of. For others it’s about the global community that they are suddenly connected to.

Our tribes change and interweave, and we’re all a part of various circles, big and small. Some sustain themselves, some grow, shrink and others fall away.

Through my virtual magic shows and presentations as a virtual motivational speaker, I’m using my time to keep the threads of our communities strong.

I’m helping people connect and share the love that we have for each other as human beings.

I’m here to ensure we continue to have family strength, no matter how big or small that family is.

I’m here to empower community.

That’s my ultimate effect.

What’s yours?
