2023’s Magic Word: The Power of “Authentic”

In this clip from my keynote for the Entrepreneur Organization, I remind business owners they must reach authenticity through honesty, consistency, transparency, and accountability.

It's official: the Merriam-Webster word of 2023 isn’t “metaverse” or “crypto.” It is “authentic.”

In a world saturated with filters and curated online personas, it seems we're all yearning for genuine connection. But what does it truly mean to be authentic in business? Is it just another buzzword, or can it be the secret weapon that leads to unprecedented success?

Now, picture this: You're in a packed conference room, the air thick with nervous anticipation. You, the presenter, launch into your practiced pitch, a polished script buzzing with jargon and statistics. And as you speak, a gnawing sensation washes over you – you're lost in the professional fog, a lone island amongst a vast ocean of inauthenticity.

But why? In an era of carefully curated online personas and relentless self-promotion, why does true authenticity feel like a magic trick reserved for seasoned gurus and lucky charmers?

As a magician, I've spent years crafting illusions, but the greatest trick I've mastered isn't smoke and mirrors – it's authenticity. On stage, amidst the gasps and applause, I'm not just performing magic; I'm building genuine connections, moments where the "wow" factor melts away and we, performer and audience, become human beings sharing a space.

So, let's break this down. What makes an interaction authentic? It's not about having your life story memorized for a LinkedIn bio. It's not about cultivating the perfect Instagram persona. It's about arriving at this magical island where your actions, words, and intentions align, where connection flows like the sparks from a well-executed card flourish.

When the "wow" factor melts away and we connect as human beings, that's when real progress happens. My performances remind us that authenticity is the key to building trust and strong relationships, on and off stage.

Here's the secret: authenticity isn't a performance, it's a destination. It's the culmination of countless small choices, a conscious effort to shed the masks and scripts, and simply be present with the people you're serving.

Now, you might say, "Easy for you, Mr. Magician. But I'm not a dazzling showman. I'm a salesperson, a manager, a CEO. Where's the magic in spreadsheets and quarterly reports?"

Ah, my friends, that's where the real magic lies. Because the currency of authenticity in business isn't sleight of hand or witty one-liners – it's honesty, consistency, and a commitment to genuine connection.

Think about it:

  • Your leads crave honesty, not hype. Ditch the inflated promises and robotic pitches. Be upfront about your strengths and limitations. Speak from the heart, not the brochure.

  • Your customers yearn for consistency, not chameleon acts. Don't be the flip-flopping persona who changes with the market wind. Stand firm in your values, deliver on your promises, and build trust brick by brick.

  • Your team demands transparency, not smoke and mirrors. Open communication, clear expectations, and shared accountability – these are the ingredients for a truly connected team, a team that thrives on authenticity.

Remember, when you arrive at this island of authenticity, the tension eases, the walls crumble, and connections blossom. It's not about being perfect, it's about being present, vulnerable, and true.

So, how do you know if you've arrived? Look for the signs:

  • The unexpected conversations. When your clients and colleagues break the script, share a personal anecdote, or offer a genuine laugh – that's a signal you've reached the island.

  • The unexpected trust. When people invest in you, your ideas, and your business without needing the hard sell – that's the magic of authenticity at work.

  • The unexpected joy. When work, in all its messy complexity, becomes a canvas for genuine interaction and shared human experience – now, that's real magic.

The truth is, authenticity isn't a luxury, it's a necessity. In a world drowning in digital noise and curated personas, the leaders who dare to be real, the businesses that choose connection over calculation, they're the ones who truly thrive.

So, my friends, are you ready to be the magician of your own business story? Are you ready to shed the masks, embrace your vulnerabilities, and set sail for the island of authenticity? Remember, the greatest illusion isn't a vanishing deck of cards, it's the illusion of being someone you're not. Be present, be honest, be yourself – and watch the real magic unfold.
